Abstract

Surrounded by the Vindhya mountain ranges, Chitrakoot is an important center of Indian cultural and religious heritage, renowned for its historical and woodcraft and craft characteristics. The regional wood art of this region not only represents the identity of the local community, but its traditions also reflect religious beliefs and lifestyles. Since ancient times, wood carving, temple decorations, religious objects, and household items have been created using wood art in Chitrakoot. Currently, wood art is facing many challenges due to the emergence of modern technology-based products and the changing market. Despite the declining number of woodcut artists, lack of traditional knowledge, and economic insecurity, it remains alive in some areas, and local artists are making efforts to preserve it. The state government needs to provide it with a global platform through government schemes, handicraft fairs, training camps, and new technologies. Educational institutions and research scholars should also play an active role in documenting and promoting this tradition. Woodcut art (Vaktaj) is an ancient form of Indian craftsmanship. The earliest examples of woodcut art are believed to originate from China. Woodblock printing began in China in 220 BC. Regional woodcut art, which has been an integral part of the cultural, religious, and social identity of the Chitrakoot region, not only reflects the creativity of folk life but also vividly represents the traditions, beliefs, and outlook on life of rural society.

This makes it clear that Chitrakoot's woodcraft still holds immense potential, provided it receives proper preservation and promotion efforts. Currently, this art exists in a limited scope. The potential of Chitrakoot's local artisans and their traditional woodcraft skills should be encouraged.
